ҹɫÊÓƵ has opened a new institute designed to put its leading-edge economics and business research on the global stage.

The Australian Institute for Business and Economics () opened at the St Lucia campus within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law (BEL) in February.

The Institute’s temporary Director is Professor John Mangan, from the ҹɫÊÓƵ Business School.

“The Institute aims to harness and develop the faculty’s strengths in economics and business research and expertise by engaging locally and internationally,” Professor Mangan said.

ҹɫÊÓƵ alumnus and New York fund manager Matthew McLennan donated $1 million to establish the Institute.

Professor Mangan said he hoped to  to attract philanthropic support from the University’s alumni community and the private sector.

He said he would  oversee the establishment of the Institute and lead an international search for a permanent director.

“A key role of the Institute will be to forge links with government, industry and the broader community while seeking potential research partners and funding opportunities,” Professor Mangan said.

“We also aim to raise awareness of ҹɫÊÓƵ’s achievements in business and economics and contribute to policy development.”

The Institute will focus on the research capacities of the ҹɫÊÓƵ Business School and the School of Economics. And will draw from other areas of the BEL Faculty.

“The Institute will build on the University’s public lecture programs and media engagement, and will offer public talks and debates on major business and economic themes,” Professor Mangan said.
